MISS AMERICA CROWNED!

Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron, was crowned Miss America last night at the 2010 Miss America pageant:

The 22 year-old sang the “Dreamgirls” ballad “Listen,” rocked a bright-yellow evening gown, and exhorted kids to get off the couch and play outdoors — and did so with just enough spunk and charisma to win a $50,000 scholarship over 52 other women. Cameron emerged as an early favorite, having won a talent prize during preliminary competition this week. But the Virginia Commonwealth University communications major truly broke away from the pack during Saturday night’s interview portion. While the other six finalists gave halting answers, Cameron seemed prepared for the pop-question about what to do about the epidemic of teen obesity. Among the celebrity judges featured on Saturday’s broadcast: Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who declared he was looking for four things in the future Miss A: “Poise, confidence, articulation, and she must like herself.”

Beautiful young woman, congrats to her!!

WIZARDS SUSPENDED FOR SEASON

We just got word that the NBA commissioner David Stern suspends Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton for the season.

Both were previously charged with felonies of weapons possessions after their “gun fight” in the locker room. No word on where either of their multi million dollar contracts stand…but it’s not looking good.

According to the AP:

Saying possession of guns in the workplace “will not be tolerated,” Stern delivered the punishment Wednesday after meeting with Arenas earlier in the day, turning his indefinite suspension into a suspension without pay.

Crittenton met with Stern on Tuesday and also was suspended without pay.

Arenas pleaded guilty Jan. 15 to a felony gun charge after an alleged confrontation with Crittenton in the Wizards’ locker room at Verizon Center in Washington.

Arenas is scheduled to be sentenced March 26. He’s in the second season of a six-year, $111 million contract.

TYRAS NEW SHOW

Tyra’s at it AGAIN.  She has a new show coming out that is essentially “Top Model” for plus sized teens.  She spoke about it on tv media outlets last night saying “I want real teens to say…oh, I’m beautiful too.”  She also wants people to understand what a real plus size model is….and that they do exercise too.  Ugh…Tyra.

By the way, the winner will get a one-year modeling contract with a major agency, a photo spread in a major fashion magazine, and a photo with Tyra on the cover of Tyra’s MagaLine. I just can’t contain my excitement.

Tyra Banks: “I’ve always felt it was my mission to expand the narrow perceptions of beauty; through America’s Next Top Model, True Beauty and The Tyra Show I challenge industry and universal standards by featuring and celebrating non-traditional beauty, and stressing that true beauty is both INSIDE & OUT. Today, I’m announcing my FIRST EVER plus-sized teen model competition which I’m calling the Fiercely Real Teen Model Search; plus-sized tends to have a negative connotation and I want young girls to realize that what’s considered plus-sized is the average American woman. That woman is healthy, fit and beautiful. Adolescence is such an impressionable time in a young woman’s life, and I hope this contest helps teen girls discover their own beauty from the inside out.”

The finalists will be introduced on Tuesday, March 2nd’s “The Tyra Show,” with the winner being crowned on Wednesday, March 3rd’s show

DRAKE COVERS COMPLEX MAGAZINE

Aubrey “Lookin Like An Old Man” Graham aka Drake is on the new cover of Complex Magazine talking about most of the same sh*t he talks about in every magazine article — being half-Jewish, life after Degrassi, getting put on by Lil Wayne, being friends with Kid Cudi and having a terrible video directed by Kanye West. Look under the hood for an excerpt and some more flicks.

Here’s a few excerpts of Drake talking about his songwriting process, making his upcoming album Thank Me Laterhow , working with Weezy and how his ex helped inspire 5 songs on So Far Gone:

Take me through your songwriting process:

Drake: With R&B, I know my sound. I know I make records to fu*k to.
[Laughs.]
Drake: The way Jay and Wayne write rap, I write R&B. I don’t write lyrics down on paper. The other day, I was in the studio with Alicia Keys, and I wrote two songs just speaking to her. I wish I could write that way for rap. With my rap songs, there’s so much of me I have to give that I don’t know if I could ever just flow. The thing is, I’m a great rapper. There’s two elements to rap: having the thoughts, and then being a great rapper. I can really rap the shit that I write. My tone, my inflection. When I listen to myself on records, I don’t feel like I don’t belong there. When I listen to “Forever,” with three of my heroes, I fit right in.

At the moment, you’re in Atlanta working on Thank Me Later, but mentioned you still need to get in the studio with Wayne.

Drake: Me and Wayne have done so much already, but if anybody has a repeat feature on this album, it’d probably be Wayne. We have a formula, a musical bond that works when we come together. I just wanna do it super-big—bigger than “Every Girl,” bigger than “Best I Ever Had.” I’d love to have a number-one record with Wayne. That’s the only record on the album that I think that way about.

Do you know what you want it to sound like?

Drake: Yes and no. We tried to go into it with a song called “My Darling Baby,” but it leaked. It was me and Wayne using our wit to entertain women, alternating mini-verses. They’re all cool punchlines and nothing sounds repetitive. When I think of a record for me and Wayne, I want to do something that’s sexy. Something that still has us rapping, but for women to enjoy.

Would that song have made the album?

Drake: Definitely. I write best about two things, which is evident from the cover of So Far Gone: the constant quest to understand love and money. I want it and I want to understand it.

Where does that need come from?

Drake: The relationship I was in before So Far Gone influenced a lot of lyrics. A lot, a lot of the lyrics. The first five records on the mixtape are sort of like a timeline of that relationship, you know?

Anyone well-known?

Drake: You wouldn’t know her. She’s great; I was able to walk away with moments, which I guess is better than walking away with nothing. But ultimately, I’m still trying to figure it out. I come up with the answers, about myself and my own thought process when it comes to love, as I’m writing. That’s when my realest thoughts manage to make their way out.

So we’re going to hear that on Thank Me Later?

Drake: This album is me trying to catch my footing again because everything’s changed. It’s a beautiful thing, ’cause I’ve just been waving, like, “Hold on, stop.” Part of being able to make a new album is taking things day to day, being observant, being able to write about the shit that’s going on

*The album is highly anticipated, but is it worth it?!

OBAMA MAKES PLANS TO HELP THE MIDDLE CLASS

President Barack Obama will be turning his attention to the middle class in his upcoming State of the Union address this Wednesday. Among the initiatives he plans to outline are increased child care tax credits, programs to cap student loan payments and assistance for families caring for elderly relatives. More details under the hood.

The president said that creating new jobs and reducing unemployment is the “single-most important thing we can do to rebuild the middle class.” “I won’t rest until we’re doing just that,” he said.

But, Obama said, “We also need to reverse the overall erosion in middle-class security, so that when this economy does come back, working Americans are free to pursue their dreams again.”

The White House says the new proposals are aimed at just that — the “sandwich generation” that is now struggling to care for both children and parents. The theme fits into the planned economic message of Obama’s prime-time address to the nation on Wednesday, which promises to provide a sharper focus on jobs and is likely to cover financial regulations, energy, education, immigration and a push to change the political tone in Washington.

Under the president’s proposals, families making under $85,000 a year would see their child care tax credit nearly doubled. Families making under $115,000 would also see at least some increase in their tax credit as well. Obama will also call for the allocation of $100 million to assist families caring for aging relatives by providing help with transportation, adult day care and in-home aids.

The initiatives also focus on savings, requiring employers that don’t offer work-based retirement plans to enroll their employees in a direct deposit retirement account, unless the employee opts out. The cost to employers would be offset by new tax credits, and the administration says the smallest firms would be exempt.

Obama will also call for caps on some student loans, limiting a borrower’s payments to 10 percent of his or her income, and forgiving all remaining debt after 10 years of payment for those in public service work — and 20 years for all others.

It’s great that the Obama administration is taking steps toward helping the middle class, but we wonder how many people will feel they still aren’t doing enough?

As previously reported Gilbert Arenas was hit with a felony gun possession charge after a locker room dispute with Crittenton.

He has since pled guilty.

JA RULE FACING 3 YEARS IN PRISON

Although it's been years since Ja Rule made a real statement in music, he's seeing his name brought up headlines, this time for a possible upcoming prison sentence.

A federal judge ruled against Ja, real name Jeffrey Atkins, in court after he asked for a dismissal of a gun possession charge.

According to Ja, the case has no substance because police had no right to search his Maybach after a 2007 concert performance in New York.

The police did complete the search however and found a .40-cal pistol that was unlicensed and after a tip from Ja himself, a small amount of marijuana.

The judge did allow a dismissal on Ja's admission to the substance but he'll have to report back to court in March to face the gun possession charge which carries a minimum 3 and 1/2 years prison.

No, Wyclef Was Not Stealing Your Money

wyclef_jean_100118.la.top.jpg

As musician Wyclef Jean tearfully denied recent allegations that he misappropriated funds from his Yele Haiti charity, experts on non-profits said they couldn't find serious wrongdoing, except for a lapse of discipline in filing his taxes.

"Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not," Jean said Monday at a press conference in Manhattan. "Yele's books are open and transparent, and we have a clean bill of health by an external auditor every year since we started."

The tears began as Jean addressed his fellow Haitians in his native Creole. "I do not cry for myself; I cry for them," he explained, translating for the English-speaking members of the audience. "I tell them, just permit us a little time."

The charges of misappropriated funds emerged over the last several days, as Jean was in Port-au-Prince assisting with relief efforts following last week's earthquake. Donations have poured in during that time, totaling "several million dollars," Hugh Locke, president of Yele Haiti, said at the press conference.

African American Love: Is there a Financial Boost to Marriage for Men?

Historically, marriage was the surest route to financial security for women. Nowadays it's men who are increasingly getting the biggest economic boost from tying the knot, according to a new analysis of census data.

The changes, summarized in a Pew Research Center report being released Tuesday, reflect the proliferation of working wives over the past 40 years — a period in which American women outpaced men in both education and earningsgrowth. A larger share of today's men, compared with their 1970 counterparts, are married to women whose education and income exceed their own, and a larger share of women are married to men with less education and income.

"From an economic perspective, these trends have contributed to a gender role reversal in the gains from marriage," wrote the report's authors, Richard Fry and D'Vera Cohn.
