Mary J. Blige recently admitted that she was offered the song "Umbrella" before it was shopped over to Def Jam to Rihanna. In response to this claim, Blige said "I'm not going to chase what [mainstream] fans like," she tells Entertainment Weekly. "It might work for a Mariah. It might work for even a Beyoncé. But Mary J. Blige is looked at as some sort of organic thing."
