Donald Trump Will See Obama Tonight

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, YourBlackWorld.comScholarship in Action

Donald Trump and Barack Obama will be in the same room tonight.  The White House Correspondents dinner has Trump on the guest list, with President Obama delivering a stand up routine that pokes fun at himself and his presidency.  While almost no topics are off limits during the dinner, Trump doesn’t expect the president to talk about him.

"I wouldn't think [Obama] would address me" during his speech, Trump said to ABC News.

Trump doesn’t have to worry about President Obama joking about him, because he’s made himself into a joke for the rest of the nation.  His recent tirades against the president, including questioning whether he is truly a natural born American, whether or not he was qualified to get into Harvard and whether he plays too much basketball, have led to his being referenced as a racist by many leading public figures.

HBCU Student Not Allowed to Graduate Because of Facebook Post

HBCU student sidelined from graduation for Facebook post

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, YourBlackWorld.comScholarship in Action

Roman Caple is a senior at St. Augustine’s College.  He was set to graduate this weekend until he was informed by the school that he wouldn’t be allowed to walk with his classmates.  Caple says that his punishment was due to a Facebook post that allegedly "jeopardized the integrity of the college."

Caple argues that the reaction of school administrators came as a result of his posts following a tornado that hit Raleigh, NC two weeks ago.  But he says that most of his comments were meant to be uplifting.  One of his posts said the following:

"We all need to set our differences aside and help one another. Falcons we will continue to fly high because that's what we do. Help your neighbor, if need be, Falcons are one."

According to what Caple said to ABC11,  "Here's the post that I believe they are referring to as to being putting this college in a negative light. It says 'St. Augs is holding classes tomorrow and students in Falcrest still don't have power. Like, wtf. Really? #dumb.'"

Caple is an active student who is a member of the school band and choir.  He also played tennis for St. Augustine for the past three years.  He’s even had the school’s logo shaved into his head, which is a surprising act of school spirit.

What if Kate Middleton Were Black?

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, YourBlackWorld.comScholarship in Action

If there were a royal wedding being held in Africa, would CNN spend an entire week covering it?  If not, what does that say about race, if anything at all?

I couldn’t help but feel entirely disconnected from the ceremony that was being shown all over our television sets at the same time hundreds of people were being killed in an Alabama tornado.  I kept wondering if the fantasy of the British fairytale had more relevance to news producers than the reality of death and devastation.

I also felt badly for any little black girls (or grown-ups) who found themselves swept away by the fairytale that they will never live in their own lives.  Not to be presumptuous, but I can’t imagine the royal family taking it well if Kate Middleton (the bride) had been black.

But perhaps I’m just speculating.

Report Says that Obama’s Father Was Forced Out of Harvard University

BOSTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's father was forced to leave Harvard University before completing his Ph.D. in economics because the school was concerned about his personal life and finances, according to newly public immigration records.

Harvard had asked the Immigration and Naturalization Service to delay a request by Barack Hussein Obama Sr. to extend his stay in the U.S., "until they decided what action they could take in order to get rid of him," immigration official M.F. McKeon wrote in a June 1964 memo.

Harvard administrators, the memo stated, "were having difficulty with his financial arrangements and couldn't seem to figure out how many wives he had."

An earlier INS memo from McKeon said that while the elder Obama had passed his exams and was entitled on academic grounds to stay and complete his thesis, the school was going to try and "cook something up to ease him out."

President Obama Says That He’s Never Seen Devastation Like What He’s Seeing in Alabama

Tuscaloosa, Alabama (CNN) -- President Barack Obama toured rubble-strewn Tuscaloosa, Alabama, neighborhoods on Friday, declaring the devastation brought by a series of powerful storms and tornadoes was beyond anything he had ever seen.

The storms killed at least 316 people in six Southern states and left entire neighborhoods in ruins. Obama promised expedited federal aid to states affected by the tornadoes.

"We're going to do everything we can to help these communities rebuild," he said.

Obama's motorcade passed street after street of homes reduced to splinters, crushed and flipped cars, and widespread debris on the way to his first stop to visit with families affected by the storms that pounded the region Wednesday and Thursday.

"I've gotta say I've never seen devastation like this," he told reporters.

The president's visit took place as emergency responders in Alabama and five other states continued to assess the damage wreaked by one of the worst outbreaks of violent weather in the southeastern United States in decades, experts said. The storms leveled neighborhoods, rendered major roads impassable and left at least 800,000 customers without power Friday afternoon.

Detroit’s NAACP Honors Kid Rock and His Confederate Flag

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

The NAACP of Detroit has committed what appears to be an incredibly sad act by giving it's Great Expectations Award to Kid Rock during it's annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.  It's ironic that the NAACP is giving an award to someone who regularly uses the Confederate flag during his concerts.  The civil rights supporter in me doesn't understand the NAACP's actions, but the Finance Professor in me understands their actions perfectly.

Here are some questions for the NAACP as they honor one of their greatest heroes, Kid Rock:

1) If Kid Rock were not a donor to your organization, would you have given him this award?  Probably not.

Is the Catholic Church Racist?

IMG00090-20110428-1053

By Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World  – the picture above (left) is from the press conference held for Father Pfleger in Chicago

I went to the press conference being held on behalf of Father Michael Pfleger, the respected Catholic Priest on the Southside of Chicago.  In case you don’t know, Father Pfleger’s church, St. Sabina, is a predominantly black church and his members love him.  He has served the South Side of Chicago with the kind of courage only shown by a true spiritual soldier.  He has stood strong with mothers as their sons have died and has put himself in the middle of nearly every kind of devastation that plagues inner cities across America.

But as most of us know, a true soldier and man of God is going to eventually be undermined by the establishment.  Father Pfleger was recently suspended by the Catholic Church for refusing to leave the members of St. Sabina and going to another church.  The parishioners were further disrespected by Cardinal Francis George when he (according to an email I received today from community activist Mark Allen) sent another priest to replace Father Pfleger, allegedly without giving any notice to the staff.

Whether the note from Allen can be confirmed or not is not the issue for me.  The fact is that with every decision being made by Cardinal George, I am losing more and more respect for Catholic Church leadership in Chicago – it seems that their mission has nothing to do with God and everything to do with egos.  Here are thoughts on the situation with Father Pfleger that come to mind:

IMG00092-20110428-1053

1) The members of St. Sabina should leave their church and find another way to connect with God.  There is almost nothing holy about the behavior of Cardinal George, for he is representing the very worst that the Catholic Church has to offer.  Bullies in the pulpit must be confronted, even if they claim to be ordained by God.

2) The behavior of the church is clearly racist.  One has to wonder if St. Sabina would be served with such disrespect if it were not predominantly black.  Also, one can’t help but wonder if Father Pfleger is being punished (actually being treated like a n*gger lover) for spending too much time around black folks and caring about the issues in our community.  If he were doing half as much work for white kids in the suburbs, his church would hail him as a hero.

3) Hypocrisy abounds in this situation.  I find it astonishing that the very same church that had no problem covering up for pastors who’ve had sex with little children would punish the pastor who has done as much for the children of Chicago as any leader in the last 30 years.  They should be ashamed for their behavior.

Do Black Women Have a Preference for Thugs? (Video)

Do you know a woman who dates one bad guy after another and then seems to spend all of her time whining about the fact that she can never find a good man?  Yea, I have too.  Well, it seems to me that, at some point, we must all have some degree of accountability for our relationship choices.

Cam Newton is the top Pick; Now the Questions Begin

The lights shined on Cam Newton after the Panthers made him the first overall pick on Thursday.

By Jason DeCrow, AP

NEW YORK — At least one major question about Cam Newton has been answered.  The lights shined on Cam Newton after the Panthers made him the first overall pick on Thursday.

The lights shined on Cam Newton after the Panthers made him the first overall pick on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers took less than five minutes to turn in their card and christen the NFL draft on Thursday night by selecting the much-scrutinized Auburn quarterback.

Now for the next round of questions.

"Everybody is not just going to stop and say, 'That's Cam, the No. 1 pick, and we can leave him alone,' " Newton said of his critics, as he met the press at Radio City Music Hall. "If anything, the floodgates have officially opened."

Newton, 21, is the 11th quarterback in the past 14 drafts to be selected with the top pick in the draft — which adds to a remarkable run in recent months that included leading the Tigers to a national championship and winning the Heisman Trophy.

He's the first player since Notre Dame's Leon Hart to be chosen with the top pick after winning the Heisman and a national title.

Yet Newton, 6-5, 248, was undoubtedly the most scrutinized player in the draft after playing in a spread offense at Auburn, and for just one season after transferring from Blinn (Texas) Junior College. Like any quarterback coming from a spread offense, Newton's chances for success will largely depend on whether he can make the transition to a pro-style offense, with a more sophisticated level of reading defenses.

Dr. Boyce: Why I don’t Care about the Royal Wedding

I had to keep myself from getting sick when I turned on the TV this morning to see some random people walking down the street wearing clothes too expensive for nearly all of my friends to afford.  I wondered why the world has become captivated and frozen over such a disgusting exercise of extravagance.  So, I thought I would list at least four of the reasons that I won’t be watching the royal wedding:

1) Because I simply don’t care and neither do most of the people reading this article.  It’s one wedding, for one couple across the world.  I honestly just don’t get it.

Teen Mothers in Detroit Face Police brutality when Trying to save their School

From the Voice of Detroit

DETROIT – In an interview with VOD, Ashley Matthews, 17, described the heroic student-led occupation of her school, Catherine Ferguson Academy on April 15. She spoke of the wholehearted support the young mothers received from the community, as well as the vicious physical and verbal brutality police visited on them during their arrests.

She said two toddlers, there with their mothers, watched the events.

Inside Catherine Ferguson Academy in happier times

“When I came home, my mom and step-dad watched us on the news,” Matthews said. “My mom broke out in tears when she saw how the police treated me. She told me, ‘I’m so proud of you.’ This was the most joyful moment of my life. I was so flabbergasted by all the support and I felt so much pride because I actually stood up for something I believe in.”

Catherine Ferguson is a Detroit Public School for teens with children, or who are expecting. It provides special support services to help them complete their education and go on to college. It received broad publicity last year for the urban farm the students themselves created in the surrounding area.

It is the only school of its kind in the country, but it is on the list of almost 60 schools that DPS czar Robert Bobb, board chair Anthony Adams, and their state cronies, have slated for the chopping block this June, either through closure, merger or charterization.  (See VOD article athttp://voiceofdetroit.net/?p=6372)

Matthews said she has a two-year-old daughter, Breanna.

It's the same story for the other big oil companies. Royal Dutch Shell turned a profit of $6.3 billion in the first quarter, and BP — despite lingering costs from the Gulf Coast oil spill— made $7.1 billion.

12 Airport Employees Charged in Drug Smuggling Ring

A federal criminal complaint charges 12 people in two separate drug smuggling schemes involving baggage handlers at Detroit Metro Airport. Federal drug agents called it a significant drug smuggling case.

BY TRESA BALDAS

Twelve people were charged today in two separate drug smuggling schemes involving baggage handlers at Detroit Metro Airport who allegedly helped sneak in suitcases filled with marijuana and cocaine from Jamaica and Houston.

According to two criminal complaints unsealed today in U.S. District Court in Detroit, six individuals were charged with running a drug smuggling scheme between Jamaica and Detroit by using baggage employee codes and insider knowledge to get drugs past security.

The complaint alleges that Northwest/Delta Airlines baggage handlers at Detroit Metro Airport were in cahoots with airport employees in Jamaica who helped sneak the suitcases full of marijuana and cocaine into Detroit. The scheme was discovered on Jan. 23, 2010, when a federal agent learned about a drug seizure by Jamaican Customs involving roughly 53 pounds of marijuana. The drugs were in a suitcase headed for Detroit, which triggered an investigation that revealed an inside job.

Dr. boyce: Cam Newton Goes Number One - Some Quick Advice

Cam Newton, Roger Goodell

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

Auburn University’s Cam Newton capped off his stunning win of the Heisman Trophy by being the #1 draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in this year’s NFL draft.

I’d like to make some quick recommendations for Cam as he begins his life of fame and fortune:

1) Save your money:  Most of your fellow NFL players were sweating out the lockout because they weren’t able to make payments on all the cars and houses that they can’t afford.  Get a good financial manager you can trust, learn to start your own business, and make sure you’re educated enough to understand what other people are doing with your money.  If you lose everything, no one is going to care.

Republican State Rep from Oklahoma Sally Kern seems to think that black people don’t work as hard as whites and that we are more likely to go to prison because we think the government will take care of us.

My Visit to See Rocky Clark

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

Today, I stood in the presence of a true soldier. I went to the hospital in Chicago to visit Rasul “Rocky” Clark, the young brother who was paralyzed 10 years ago in a football accident at the age of 16. Rocky was paralyzed from the neck down, only able to move his head and nothing else. His legs and arms are thinner than anything I’ve ever seen, he can barely breathe, and he’s dying right now because his insurance company decided to kill his policy.

Rocky’s mother, Annette, has stood by her son day-in and day-out every single day since the accident. She has a bed right next to him in the hospital and repeatedly told me that “I’m not gonna leave my baby.” Every normal day seems to be abnormally tragic, with nurses cleaning bacteria out of Rocky’s one remaining lung, and the young man quietly repeating the words, “Mama, I can’t breathe.”

I cried when I stood with Rocky’s mother, because I connected to a piece of her pain. I thought about the fact that Rocky is the same age as my own brother, and I would be torn to pieces after seeing my brother in such a devastating situation. Rocky could barely speak, but he spoke with the wisdom of a man who’d been sitting in the same spot and only able to move his head since the year 2000.  He told me about the importance of continuing to fight and never taking life for granted.  He also told me that he believes no person on earth should have to go through such an experience without adequate healthcare coverage.

In the interview below, I speak with Rocky’s mother as she describes how her insurance company, “Health Special Risk, Inc.” sent her a two sentence letter letting her know that her son’s policy had hit it’s $5 million dollar cap. She also mentioned how Rocky’s school, Eisenhower High School in Blue Island, Illinois, had no problem using this young black man as a piece of athletic meat, but care almost nothing for him as he lies in the hospital about to die from their negligence. Administrators told Rocky and his mother that he had a lifetime policy, but now everyone threw their hands in the air when it was determined that the policy only covered $5 million dollars or the rest of your life, whichever one comes first. Please visit SaveRockyClark.com to join our coalition to help this young man, and I advise all parents to understand what their kids are getting into when they play the sports that are marketed to our young children.

Our conversation is below. Yes, the video quality is not very good, but I had to record this by any means necessary. Rocky’s story needs to be told somehow – I hope you will help me share it.

NFL Player Albert Haynesworth Allegedly Put Credit Card in Woman’s Cleavage

AP Photo

By JESSICA GRESKO
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth allegedly slid his credit card into the bra of a waitress and then touched her breast, according to court papers filed Wednesday offering Haynesworth a plea deal in the sexual abuse case.

Haynesworth's lawyer, however, said the deal was not one he'd take and that his client would fight the charge. Prosecutors filed paperwork in Superior Court in Washington saying that if Haynesworth agrees to plead guilty to simple assault they would drop the misdemeanor sexual abuse charge. Both charges carry the same maximum penalty, however, up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

Haynesworth's attorney, A. Scott Bolden, wrote in an e-mail Wednesday to The Associated Press that the offer was "no deal at all, nor is it one we would entertain."

"My client is prepared to, and will vigorously fight these charges," he wrote.

It is typical for prosecutors to offer a plea deal at the start of misdemeanor proceedings and to share details of their case at that time.

An overview of the government's case, filed with the plea offer in court documents, includes a fuller description of the alleged incident at The W Hotel in Washington in mid-February. The eight-page document stated that Haynesworth was attending a birthday party the night of Feb. 12-13 and was ready to pay the bill of more than $800 when his waitress was called over with her hands full of dishes.

Whoopi Goldberg Calls Donald Trump Out for his Racism

In a recent statement, Trump said that he hopes the president “gets on the phone or gets off his basketball court or whatever he is doing at the time” and pressure OPEC to lower gas prices.

Whoopi said that as a person who was raised to always look beyond race to find ways to explain the behavior of others, she could not find any way to explain Trump’s behavior other than flat out racism.  The video is below:

Oprah Winfrey Asks President Obama about the Birth Certificate

Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey

Your Black World Reports

On a recent appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, President Barack Obama was asked about the birth certificate issue.  The president recently released his birth certificate to the public in order to squash growing controversy about his birthplace.

"Why did you wait so long, though?" Oprah asked. "When it first came up, were you thinking, I hope I was born here?"

The president noted that his primary objective was to put the matter behind him so that he could focus on more important political issues.  He referred to the birth certificate matter as a “sideshow” that distracted the nation at a very serious time.

"I said to my team, look, even though this is not usually what the state of Hawaii does," President Obama said, "even though the Republican governor of Hawaii, the Democratic governors of Hawaii, all the various officials had confirmed that I was born here, let's ask them for a special dispensation where they will go ahead and provide us with the original to see if we can put this to rest."

The Birther issue gained momentum after leading Republican Donald Trump went onto several talk shows arguing that he’d found “interesting” evidence that President Obama wasn’t born in the United States.  A recent poll showed that 25% of Americans, and the majority of Republicans don’t believe President Obama was born in this country.  Many have argued that the controversy is partly driven by racism.

Should You Need a License to Braid Hair? A Woman Files a Lawsuit Over the Issue

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World – Scholarship in Action

Jestina Clayton is a woman in Utah who is originally from Sierra Leone in West Africa.  She does African braiding part-time in order to make extra money.  She is now being confronted with the loss of significant income, since a law in the state of Utah claims that you must have a full cosmetology license in order to braid hair.

Clayton filed suit this week in the court of law.  She is being backed by the Institute for Justice, a Virginia-based organization that helps people like Clayton challenge unjust laws.

“African hair braiding is safe, and you shouldn’t need the government’s permission to practice this trade,” said Paul Avelar, her attorney. “Both the federal and Utah  constitutions protect every individual’s right to earn an honest living in their chosen occupation free from pointless government interference. When the government imposes unreasonable regulations, as it has done here, courts must protect the individuals’ rights. No one should have to hire a lawyer or lobbyist just to braid hair.”

Clayton said that she’d originally called the Cosmetology Board to determine if a license was necessary for her to braid hair.

“They told me I did not need a cosmetology license as long as I was not using chemicals,” she said.

After someone reported her business, she is now faced with the daunting cost of trying to get the license, which can be as high as $18,000 and require 2,000 hours of coursework.

“Licensing laws are a convenient cover for protecting a regulated industry from competition,” explained Tim Keller, executive director of IJ-Arizona.  “By forcing hair braiders to get an expensive license, cosmetology schools are
guaranteed tuition-paying students and licensed cosmetologists are protected from competition, forcing consumers to pay more.”

This case is an important one for Ms. Clayton to fight, because hair care is an important industry for slews of black women all across America.  Additionally, black women should be insulted by the fact that the hair care industry that they put billions of dollars into is controlled by people who are not black.  Ms. Clayton is right to fight fire with fire by taking this case to court, and other black hair care providers would be wise to take note to learn how to gain a greater stake in the industry that drains money out of the pockets of black women everywhere.

My God daughter went to “hair school” after she graduated from high school.  Although I’d voted for her to attend college, I eventually embraced the idea and started doing my research.  Once I found out about the massive amounts of money being spent by black women in this industry, I encouraged my God daughter to accompany her hair stylist training with a few lessons on entrepreneurship.  This would hopefully position her to be able to independently provide for her family in an industry that is not going to disappear any time soon.  Many black women would rather starve than to let their hair go south, so the money will likely be flowing in perpetuity.

The point in all this is to say that we’ve got to be more creative in how we live our lives.  Black people have long been free, but we still haven’t learned how to be independent.  As long as we’re depending on others outside our community to provide us with the things we need (especially jobs), we will always remain vulnerable.

From an entry-level job as a fill-in bank teller, she forged a career as a commercial banking assistant, earning enough to become a homeowner. She finished college and then got an MBA. Even after the recession unfolded in late 2007, her degrees and her familiarity with the business world lent her a sense of immunity to the forces ravaging much of the American economy. Nolan was an exemplar of the African American middle class and the increasingly professional ranks of the so-called New South.

But in September 2008, everything changed.

A bank human resources officer called her into a private conference room. “All I heard was, ‘Your position has been eliminated,’” says Nolan, 37, who, despite being one of the more than 13 million officially unemployed Americans, still spends most days in her self-styled banker’s uniform of pearls and pants and practical flats. “My mind started racing.”

More than two years later, Nolan is still looking for a job and feeling increasingly anxious about a future that once felt assured. Her life has devolved from a model of middle class African American upward mobility into an example of a disturbing trend: She is among the 15.5 percent of African Americans out of work and still looking for a job.

For economists, that number may sound awful, but it’s not surprising. The nation’s overall unemployment rate sits at 8.8 percent and the rate among white Americans is at 7.9 percent. For a variety of reasons -- ranging from levels of education and continuing discrimination to the relatively young age of black workers -- black unemployment tends to run twice the rate for whites. Yet since the Great Recession, joblessness has remained so critically elevated among African Americans that it is challenging longstanding ideas about what it takes to find work in the modern-day economy.

Millions of people like Nolan, who have precisely followed the oft-dictated recipe for economic success -- work hard, get an education, seek advancement -- are slipping backward. Even as they apply for jobs and accept the prospect of a future with less job security and lower pay, they remain stalled in unemployment.

Trading down has become a painful truth for much of working America, but this truth becomes particularly stark when seen through the prism of race. Only 12 percent of all Americans are black, but working-age black Americans comprise nearly 21 percent of the nation’s unemployed, according to federal data. The growing contrast between prospects for white and black job-seekers challenges a cherished American notion: the availability of opportunity and upward mobility for all.

The Obama’s Stop to See Oprah on their Way to NY

Obamas Chicago Oprah

CHICAGO -- President Barack Obama flew home to Chicago on Wednesday to help his pal and supporter Oprah Winfrey close out her syndicated talk show with a "big get" – an interview with him.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, took turns answering Winfrey's questions during a taped interview at her studio, her first in 25 years with a sitting president and first lady.

Winfrey has announced that she's ending her top-rated program on May 25 after a quarter-century on television.

The Obamas' interview is scheduled to air on Monday.

The president's day of politicking was continuing later Wednesday with travel to New York for his first fundraising sweep of the city since announcing his re-election bid this month. Three Democratic Party fundraisers were scheduled across midtown Manhattan, including an event at the home of financier and former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and a dinner at The Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Obama was not due back at the White House until the wee hours of Thursday.

McJobs Are Not the Cure for An Ailing Economy

Job seekers wait in line at a one-day hiring event April 19 at a McDonald's in San Francisco. Hundreds showed up to apply.

Editor's note: Annette Bernhardt is policy co-director of the National Employment Law Project, a national advocacy group for the rights of lower-wage earners. She was lead researcher on NELP's recent report, "A Year of Unbalanced Growth: Industries, Wages, and the First 12 Months of Job Growth After the Great Recession."

(CNN) -- We are starved for signs that the economy is picking up. So when McDonald's threw its doors open to hire 50,000 workers nationwide, media networks scrambled to film applicants lining up across the country for that increasingly elusive piece of the American dream -- a job.

The hirings were billed as a boost to the economy, and for a fraction of the country's 13.5 million unemployed, landing one of these jobs will be a huge and welcome relief.

But let's step back from the McDonald's public relations bonanza for a minute and recognize that nothing is great about low-wage jobs, even when they flood the economy by the thousands. Low-wage jobs subject families to unrelenting economic stress. They trap workers in dead-end careers, denying them the money and time to invest in education and new skills. And they rob local communities of middle-class incomes and stable households.

Tyler Perry Launches Third Series on TBS

The prolific writer/director/actor has signed his latest deal with the Turner-owned network for "For Better or Worse," a dramedy series based on his "Why Did I Get Married?" film franchise.

Michael Jai White ("The Dark Knight") and Tasha Smith ("Couples Retreat") are set to reprise their big-screen roles as television anchor Marcus and salon owner Angela.

Like Perry's past TBS projects, "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns," the young adult-focused series will roll out with 10 episodes. If the latter reaches a certain ratings threshold during its initial run, the network will order 90 more.

Production will begin this summer, just as Perry wraps production on "Payne" after a staggering 222 episodes (i.e., about 35 more than "Seinfeld").

Lawmakers Start Asking Questions about the Tanya McDowell Case

HARTFORD -- State lawmakers are wondering why a homeless Bridgeport woman is being prosecuted on felony charges for enrolling her son in a Norwalk school.

Rep. Bruce V. Morris, D-Norwalk, said Wednesday that since Tanya McDowell's 5-year-old son A.J. was withdrawn from Brookside Elementary School in January she should be held accountable for no more than half the $15,000 she has been charged with stealing.

If it were $7,500, it would only reach the level of a misdemeanor, he said, stressing that the case underscores Connecticut's record of depriving inner-city residents the same level of education that is available in the suburbs.

"She wanted to see to it that her child was given a great education," Morris said. "Education is the equalizer. Equal access to education is the civil rights issue of today and it's something that needs to be addressed across all borders. Connecticut has the largest achievement gap in the country."

House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk, the city's longtime expulsion and residency hearing officer, said Wednesday that usually a parent is given a low-profile chance to withdraw.

"I think in 19 years of doing it I've done about 12 or 13 and they are actually called by statute `denial of school accommodations,' "Cafero said in an interview on the House floor. "It is certainly within the rights of any school, I think, to make sure the people getting the education are residents."

Ron Artest Wins NBA Good Citizenship Award

Your Black World reports

Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA’s J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award this week.  His teammate, Lamar Odom, was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year.

"I think it's great recognition that the NBA sees what I've been doing outside of basketball," Artest said. "I'm definitely grateful for the award.

"It's something that's not on people's minds as far as me getting a citizenship award, but it was something that I wanted and I'm definitely happy I got it."

The award is a surprise, given that Artest once received the longest suspension in NBA history.  In 2004, Artest went into the stands and attacked some fans who were throwing things at him.

"I feel like I've been doing a lot of work over the years, a lot of charity work, just giving back to the communities," Artest said. "This award ranks up there with Defensive Player of the Year, to me, as one of the most important individual awards I've ever gotten."

Artest says that the award was something that he’d always hoped he could win.

"I don't think it would have happened a couple years ago. But it was something I always wanted, kind of under the covers, people not knowing the whole Ron Artest, but just a part," Artest said. "But you've got to have good timing. You have to be in the right place at the right time. Things have to happen, and it worked out perfectly for me at this point where I'm at in my career right now."

To almost no one’s surprise, Artest won the award for bringing awareness to mental health issues.  He even thanked his therapist publicly after winning the title for the Lakers a year ago.  In one of many acts of charity, Artest raffled off his 2010 championship ring for $650,000 and then donated the money to various mental health organizations.

Congratulation’s Ron, we’re proud of you.  At Your Black World, we believe that black men deserve second chances.
