“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further,” Murphy and Edmonds tell PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
Murphy, 46, and Edmonds, 40, exchanged vows on New Year's Day on a private island in the South Pacific, but there was speculation that something was wrong with the marriage from the start. The marriage overseas was not legally binding, and the couple was dragging their feet to get the legal work done.
There is no word as to whether the couple is going to remain together or not.
Eddie Murphy has had a string of interesting relationships during his career. Last year, he was known to have spent time with Melanie Brown of the Spice Girls. The couple then had a child together after a well-publicized custody dispute. It turned out that Murphy was the father, in spite of his attempts to argue otherwise.
