A Kentucky man who was incarcerated for about nine years saw his conviction overturned Tuesday for a deadly shooting and robbery in 1993 after a judge ruled the evidence in the case definitively pointed to another man.
Edwin A. Chandler, 37, who called his time in prison "a walking nightmare," cried after Jefferson Circuit Judge Frederic Cowan exonerated him in the death of 25-year-old Brenda Whitfield. She was shot Sept. 28, 1993, during a robbery at a Chevron Food Mart where she worked.
A grand jury charged the other man, Percy Phillips, 45, of Louisville, on Tuesday with Whitfield's slaying. Phillips was in state custody serving 20 years on an unrelated assault conviction. His court file did not list an attorney Tuesday afternoon.
"Me being overly upset about this is not going to help," Chandler said at a news conference before the court hearing. "Peace is where I really am right now."
