Happy Black History month, I contemplated wearing a dashiki during this post, but I couldn’t find it (lol). I am a Black woman, with a black mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. As often as being dark skinned is frowned upon you wouldn’t believe I love my dark skin; my skin of Nefertiti.
Although, I am the darker child between my sister and brother, my mother has never mentioned my complexion being a ‘wrong’ thing. I hate to hear people say “your black ass”, “he’s too dark” or “she’s too dark”. Those words, which we have grown accustomed to display a disinterest in the ‘darker’ skin, those words we speak that give children a complex about their complexion. Those sentences of ignorance easily roll off the tongue of black people, in some cases it rolls of the tongue of a darker skin person.
Sadly, we have all these rappers “shaming” dark skin, and they ass ain’t too far from burnt toast themselves. I was very disappointed when I heard the ‘dark butts’ statement from that rapper with the one hit, “Young Burg”. Then, I was even more disappointed when I heard Lil Wayne express a lack of interest in the dark skin woman, not because I am dark skinned, but because his daughter is dark skinned.
Why do these people of statue, degrade and disrespect the black woman in PUBLIC and not defend her? When the Dixie chicks said something about George Bush, Texas was upset. However, rappers can humiliate the dark skin woman with no-one at her defense.
It’s amazing how the opinions of rappers carry some kind of weight across the world, but let’s not forget the opinion of the President of the Unite States! His opinion and taste says a lot with his credentials and position. While rappers are expressing their ignorance, he and his ‘dark skin’ wife display beauty.
Being a handsome Harvard graduate, I’m sure there were all kinds of prospective women, light skin, brown, and different ethnicities that could have been his wife, but the man that holds the highest position in America has a dark skinned wife; A wife that resembles women in our history, in our family, and in our community.
Take pride in your dark skin, for it is beautiful. It is no mistake, all of us, all ethnicities, all complexions, were fearfully and wonderfully made!
Meaningful Blessings,
Madam Prezident
I’m a Sista
I’m a Sista
Wide hips
Thick lips
Independent and strong
I do things on my own
Attitude for the mood
And can get down to any groove
I make everything stop when I walk into a room
Like DMX says, “Here comes the boom”
Some people say I’m conceited/but I’m just convinced
My attitude comes from my ancestors
The many that were lynched
Hair right
Body tight
Long nails and pedicure toes
Dreads and afros
I can rock all types of styles
From ponytails and braids
Hell, I can even rock a fade
Elegant/intelligent
Men you can have your women
That are White, Asian, and Chinese
I may be too deep
Because I am the one
Somebody and everybody want to meet
Yet alone be
Because
I AM A SISTA
